December 1, 1986, inauguration of the Museum of Orsay. The museum of Orsay is located in the old railway station of Orsay. The building is built by the architect tourangeau Victor Laloux (1850-1937) of 1898-1900 and is inaugurated, within the framework of the World Fair, July 14, 1900. Threatened of demolition and replacement by a large modern hotel, the idea of the creation of a museum devoted to arts of second half of the XIXème century, in the old buildings of the station of Orsay, will see the day in 1973 pennies the government of George Pompidou. The building, masterpiece of the Art nouveau, has escaped, thanks to a readjustment wanted by the president of the Republic Valéry Giscard d' Estaing, with the demolition which undergounderwent considerable constructions of the beginning of the XXème century. In 1978, the building was classified historic building. The museum was inaugurated on December 1, 1986 by President François Mitterrand after being completely refitted by the architect Italian Gae Aulenti.
